Ranganayaka Mandapam: A Space with a Layered Story

A mandapam’s name and use can preserve memories of changing historical circumstances.

TTD’s temple-history account associates the Ranganayaka Mandapam with the tradition that images of Lord Ranganatha from Srirangam were brought to Tirumala for safekeeping during a period of invasions, and later returned.

The same account describes the mandapam’s continuing place within the temple complex and notes that its uses have changed. The story illustrates how spaces can carry layered religious memory as well as architectural history.

Because parts of this account are transmitted as temple tradition, readers should retain that attribution rather than treating every detail as independently established by contemporary evidence.
