Krishnadevaraya in the Temple Record

Inscriptions help trace royal visits, gifts, and the languages of the Vijayanagara age.

The TTD-published study The Tirumala Temple by Dr. N. Ramesan describes numerous inscriptions associated with the Vijayanagara ruler Sri Krishnadevaraya and his queens. These records document visits and offerings made to Sri Venkatesvara.

Ramesan notes that records associated with Krishnadevaraya range from 1513 to 1524 CE and appear in Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada. Such inscriptions are valuable because they preserve specific names, gifts, and administrative or ritual details in their historical context.

Inscriptions are not a complete account of the past: they reflect what donors and institutions chose to record. Read alongside other evidence, however, they provide an unusually concrete window into temple patronage.
